1, 2, 3 triggers pulled!

Well, I came VERY close to owning a Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM lens this week.  So close that I cancelled the order I placed.  The thing with the 50mm f/1.4 USM, is that is costs about 5-times more than the 50mm f/1.8.  There are other differences, and the f/1.4 is a bit better, but not 5x better!

So, yesterday I pulled 3 triggers:

 EF 50mm g2220488rc4

From Left to Right:

- Canon 50mm F/1.8 II (and a 52mm Tiffen UV Filter)
Cheapest EF lens, ultrafast (1.8!!) and for the money, a steal! Only 130g too!
- Gitzo Explorer g2220
The center column is offset and it is said that this ‘pod is great for macro work.
- Bogen/Manfrotto 488RC4 Ballhead
2 levels, and a relatively inexpensive ballhead compared to an RRS BH-55 -)

According to BHPhotoVideo (Toys-R-Us for photographers), my tripod and ballhead shipped.  Amazon is shipping my lens and filter.  Very excited to receive it all -)

Elizabethtown: crap script with a wonderful score

Firstly, I feel that Orlando Bloom should keep practicing his marksman skills and protecting a hobbit dude with a shiny ring.  If he tries anything other than that, he tends to suck.  And Kirsten Dunst can act like an idiot wonderfully - but is she acting?  Who knows…

We sat and watched Elizabethtown on Saturday evening after a wonderful meal at Bamba Bistro for our 365.25-day anniversary.  Meal was fantastic, and the bill was downright..not fantastic, but I had no qualms about paying it - great dinner.

So back to Elizabethtown, the story of a shoe designer that becomes a rather sizable failure by designing a shoe that, much like Bloom’s acting - sucks.  Bloom can’t convince me he’s American with his accent.  There were times when his pronunciation cracked and his British accent was just a bit too much - poor chap!  Anyway, Kirsten Dunst plays a brain-damaged flight attendant on a plane that Bloom is on due to his Father’s death in Kentucky.  I pretty much thought of his movie as a half-assed, unrealistic Garden State - one of my top movies (Blues Brothers , btw, is the best movie evah).

The movie could have ended in about…60 minutes.  Bloom meets Dunst, is taken aback by her stupidity, meets his gargantuan Kentuuuucky family, checks into a hotel and ends up talking to Dunst on his cell for the entire evening.  The script called for a pointless, lengthy and mundane road trip that Bloom takes from Kentuuucky to Oregon (or Calif..iono) and Dunst organizes a book full of photos and crap for him to follow along his way (where the hell did she get time to do this?!).

The movie left me rather annoyed at both Bloom and Dunst.  Thank god Alec Baldwin had a cameo - and a good one at that.  It was very early in the film though and it left me missing it by the time the blasted road trip occurred.

The shining star in the movie was the score - filled with wonderful songs from a range of artists - Petty, Elton John, The Temptations and a few others that I don’t recall.  There are two volumes to the soundtrack too! - Check it out.

To Mr. Bloom - Here’s to hoping there’s a new LOTR movie…not sure you can do anything else.

To Ms. Dunst - You actually have me convinced that very little acting was required when the script called for a "Really mental Kentuuucky Girl"

To the dude/chick that did the music - You turned a crap film into a crap film with a great score, well done!

This concludes my first attempt at a very crass and harsh movie review, woo!

new galleries, ftw!

Just a note saying I added a few galleries - GO.  NOW!.  Added night shots, random March photos and some Easter Sunday macros

As a friend told me last nite - It’s time for a tripod.  I couldn’t agree more, yet pulling the trigger is going to be tough, given the cost of it all Undecided

I want you all to watch this

I’ve tried really hard to not put anything political or whatever on this blog.  I realize that, given the current state of things, a political argument could get nasty, as the views people have are only getting more distinct, and stronger as things progress the way they have been.

(Didja notice how vague I kept that? -D)

With that said, I stumbled across a video that I watched late December/early January on 9-11.  This video did not convince me 100% of its theories.  What it did do is force me to think about 9-11 from the angle of "Who was really behind it" - and thus, I find it to be a good movie/documentary/thinger

The movie:  Loose Change:  2nd Edition, can be found on Google’s Video site >HERE<.  The reason I want everyone to see it is because I want to discuss it -).  I haven’t really shared my thoughts about it because I don’t think I’ve got a good basis for discussion.  I’ve found people that reply with a "No, it didn’t happen like that" and it is sort of discouraging.

This is much the same reaction I get when I tell people to not shop at Wal-Mart - See why here:  High Cost of Low Prices and the main site.  Oh, and wakeupwalmart.com

That’s about it.  Go, watch the video(s) and shoot me some feedback.  Again, not saying it is correct, just looking for a discussion -)

it’s not to late…to flick it! flick it good!

Pardon the ridiculously bad title to this post.  Just an FYI that I added some mo’ photos to my flickr photostream.  The night shots turned out okay for the most part.  I removed my UV filter, which was suggested by some flickr folks.  This removed some crazy glare and provided a more uniform "star" on each of the light sources - I’m tempted to get a 4point star filter, but, we’ll see.  This series of shots would have been great with a nice wide lens…how I hate the price tag of them :grr:.  So, here are some highlights…

To formally reply to Alex about sports photography, I certainly would not object to it, as it would be a challenge.  Not sure I have the hardware right now for it.  My 28-105mm is not very fast (f/4.5) at the telephoto end.  This would force me to up the ISO, which I’m not completely against doing.  I can go up to 400 without complaining too much.  800 isn’t _that bad, but I hate noise…period -).

The Canon 70-200mm f/4L USM would be my weapon of choice for sports.  I’d be tempted to get the 1.4x or 2.0x extender, but I risk losing some stops…ah SLR photography, how I love and hate you all at the same time -P
