Goodbye Old Friend

This weekend rocked, minus the parts I was a grouchy 5 year-old. Friday consisted of Wegmans and relaxing then bed at about 10pm. It’s hard for me to be overly energetic on Friday evenings. I’d almost rather get to bed early and attack the weekend at 6:30am ish. I hate sleeping in. Even in my early 20s (my god..I have early 20s now…just realized that), I never liked sleeping in late but most times I had to due to a substantial hang over.

Anyway, Saturday commenced with a trip to the Public Market, trying to fit a dresser in a Jetta and failing and taking our nephew to see Wall-E while his mom and dad saw Indy 4…and hated it. We loved Wall-E. At one point Ren wanted to look through the magazine he brought but seemed to realize the theater would win the battle as you could barely see your feet let alone text on a magazine. Post-movie, we headed to Wegs for sushi, and hung out with Ren/Jay/Yuki till late afternoon.

I seem to be coming down with sizable headaches every time we go to a theater. I called the eye doc for an appointment and I got one - in SepTEMBER. Ah well. So yea, Saturday was going to consist of heading to the Taste of Rochester, but the headache totally kicked my ass. That, and I have pretty much zero motivation to attend pretty much every festival/event in the Greater Rochester Area. Not sure why, but I’m guessing it has something to do with hating crowds and/or having a mild case of apathy for this region (apathy is probably too strong of a word but I’m not exactly a thesaurus so apathy it is).

Sunday was the day I was really waiting for. TV Day. I woke up at 7 am (mm…love 7am on a Sunday) and had some iced coffee that Silk makes. Wasn’t bad, but it was far too sweet for my taste. I then got down to business and dismantled the entire home theater. After that, it was time to get some cleaning done. My father’s co-worker, who was buying the TV, showed up in the afternoon and packed up the Hitachi.

I’ll admit I was a bit sad when it left. I hope the new owner(s) take good care of and I’m sure they will. The guy that bought it is a real nice guy. He immediately greeted me with a congratulations (for our wedding…still caught me off guard a bit).

My sadness lifted greatly after we got the TV and stand setup in our living room. Samsung makes an incredible LCD. I can’t really do a review of it as all I can muster right now is: Wow.  We went with a Samsung LCD TV and we are currently loving it. I ordered some HDMI cables so I can move away from the swarm of component cables we have. I’m still hanging onto some component cables for the DVD player, however.

Oh and lastly, we headed over to Ming’s Noodles on S. Clinton Saturday for dinner - fantastic place. Their udon noodles were awesome. Heading to Ming’s 2 on Monroe near Jeremiah’s tonight.

Summer, Hypermiling, Proud of Him

Greetings dwellers of cyberspace.  I figured I’d combine posts so I don’t lose anything when writing another post…er whatever.

Summer

Thus far, the summer has been fantastic.  I got married, spent a week off with my wife and relaxed and have been slowly reorganizing our apartment.  Speaking of apartment, we have decided to renew our lease for another year and see what the job market brings for C next year.  We have been throwing around the idea of moving for awhile and the more I see her struggle with the Education job market here, the more I’m ready to get out of here for a few years.  We can move back at some point, but I refuse to settle down and get a house and see her struggle year after year.  When she told me that one position she interviewed for had 350 other candidates, it shocked me.  350 for ONE position - I’d say the job market is just a tad saturated.

Beyond that, this summer is looking to be a busy one - but busy in the best way.  Next weekend we are headed down to Ithaca to hang out with two close friends and a few others for a 4th of July bash - can. not. wait.  The weekend after that, we are headed to Burlington, Vermont - a city that is high atop our list of places to move to.  We are headed there with my cousin and her fiancee.  I’m sure the weekend will prove to be excellent

August is the “month o weddings”.  We’ve got three to go to, one being in California.   Very excited about seeing California again - another place on our list of places to move to…at.

I hope this summer consists of me actually getting off my ass and biking to work.  I’ve talked about it to almost everyone I know and don’t know and yet here I am at work with my car in the parking lot.  Which leads me to my next topic…

Hypermiling

As I don’t have a hybrid, I can’t really get crazy high mileage but I’ve found my little blue coupe can get around 29mpg if I drive without considering the $34958764937/gal price tag on gas.  So, to try and buy less war fuel (clever, no?), I’m taking steps to up my mileage:

  1. Over-inflate tires by 3psi.  Fronts @ 35psi, rears @ ~37psi
  2. Drive slow.  In 55mph zones, I go 60; 65mph, 64.
  3. Shift low.  Manuals rock, allowing my to shift at 2,000 RPM per shift
  4. Coast.  Neutral is my friend.  I coast whenever possible
  5. Cruise, baby.  I use cruise whenever possible.  It’s great as I drive so slow, I never have to pass!

The result?  Not sure yet.  I’m at about 275mi thus far on this tank and I’m between 1/4 and 1/2 tank.  The problem is, once my tank goes below a 1/2 tank, it seems to take no time at all before the little orange “get fuel soon dude!!1″ light goes on.  I’ll keep you posted

Proud of Him

Wednesday we were able to get together with my best friend, his wife and their freaking adorable daughter.  He was slated to be in our wedding but due to the Military being the beast it is, he wasn’t able to come up.  In the end, I just wanted to see them and it was nice to see them and only them for an entire evening as opposed to seeing them at a crazed wedding.  We hit up the Distillery for stellar food, then walked around highland park where his daughter tried chasing rabbits - seriously, the kid is adorable.

I was thinking, after they left, of how proud I am of him and how much I respect him.  When he left for boot camp I was a mix of emotions.  I knew I would miss hanging out with him, knew this was the start of a different chapter of his and my life (leaving college, getting job, etc) but at the same time, I was thrilled he was doing what he always wanted to do.  He wasn’t happy here.  Now he has a wife who’s a blast to hang out with and a daughter who will no doubt turn out to be a polite, respectful and beautiful young lady.  I am incredibly proud of you, Phil and I have a ton of respect for you, doing what you do to keep us safe and the baddies at bay.

And We’re Back

This post is a few days late, but m’eh. This week is “back to reality” week as my wife (love saying that!) and I return to work after a fantastic week off. I’ll try to replay the week in an orderly fashion…

I took Friday the 6th off from work as I needed to get errands done and the rehearsal was that night. Day was relaxing despite family coming into town, rehearsal, etc.

On Saturday, June 7th, I became a husband and, with coupon (wedding band) in hand, I got a complimentary wife! All kidding aside, the day was absolutely spectacular. We had a fantastic time sharing our day with everyone! There were a handful of times I found myself falling in love all over again. I got a bit choked up about 12 different times during the ceremony too.

The beginning of last week was spent at a great Bed and Breakfast near Naples, NY called the Vagabond Inn. I’ve never napped/slept so much in my life. We both needed the downtime and time to ourselves.

The latter part of the week included running a slew of errands. We were kinda tired by the end of the week, but in reality, we were able to get a lot of stuff done and not worry about it later when we may be working. I was also able to snag a Playstation 3 (Metal Gear Solid 4 Bundle) and GTA IV. Being a huge fan of the GTA series, I was happy to own the fourth installment.

The weekend was quiet as we prepared for reality come Monday. Sunday we headed out to Aladin’s and treated our parents and C’s brother, son and girlfriend (I’m officially and uncle..in-law!) to dinner.

So there you have it, the incredibly abridged version of our week. Posts may be infrequent going forward as my interest in this blog is in a lull.

Home Stretch

This is the final week of preparations for our wedding. So far things are going well. We are going to be talking to most of the vendors who we haven’t had a final conversation with and things will get squared away.

C’s sister and her girlfriend came into town this past weekend and stayed with us over the weekend and it was really great to see them/hang out with them as I know I won’t see a ton of them this week.

Bachelor party was a rousing success. The turnout was small, but a great time was still had by all. I received a poker set from my good friend and groomsman Seth and those playing poker let me keep the cash they threw in for chips - Thanks again guys!

Can’t say I’ll write much more till next week as this week will slowly get crazier…or it could quickly get crazy. We shall see.

We are both very excited about the day, seeing all of our friends and family and having a great day, albeit a bit hot (bit warm + humid - ah well)

4 days!
